waste management uk : company info
In June 2003 WormTech started a waste management and waste recycling green waste kerbside collection service in Monmouthshire. Within six months we were collecting from some twenty eight thousand houses, and undertook a participation rate survey in October 2003 which showed 75% participation, one of the highest in the U.K. We currently collect from thirty six thousand houses, which gives us the largest kerbside collection service for green waste in the U.K.
In February 2004 we were granted planning for a composting facility in Caerwent Monmouthshire. The whole operation is carried out inside converted military buildings, and is classed as an in-vessel operation, e.g. the buildings themselves are the in-vessels, as they can be sealed from the environment. This gives us the opportunity to take kitchen waste and work within the Animal Food By-product Act, in the composting of biodegradable food waste.
During 2006, the management decided that our aim would be to become a total recycling company and handle all materials from green and food waste to cardboard and paper. To this end, we are now implementing a strategy of collecting alternate materials from commercial premises in the South Wales area. The site in Caerwent is perfect for dealing with all types of materials which are processed inside old munitions buildings, thus putting these old military buildings to a worthwhile use in today’s world. The site is also of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). SSSI’s are the basic building block of nature conservation legislation and they may be made on any area of land which is considered to be of special interest by virtue of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical features.
The Caerwent site has 5 areas SSSI within it and Wormtech’s neighbours include the Great Crested Newt, Bats, Dormice, badgers and an abundance of wild flowers.
